2027 FireFly ESSA — Your Questions, Answered

Straight answers from the workshop that builds and services every bike we sell.

What is Shimano ESSA?

ESSA is Shimano's 8-speed drivetrain for everyday mountain bikes. The FireFly runs it as a 1×8: one shifter, one chainring, eight gears. Fewer parts to adjust, and the wide 11–45T cassette still gives you an easy gear for steep hills.

Why hydraulic disc brakes instead of cable discs?

On a cable brake, a steel cable pulls the pads; it stretches and gathers grit, so the lever gets heavier and needs adjusting. On a hydraulic brake, sealed oil pushes the pads. You get a lighter two-finger pull, steady stopping power in wet weather, and pads that take up their own wear.

How is the 2027 FireFly ESSA different from the FireFly M1?

It's a new bike: a new frame with internal cable routing, Shimano ESSA 1×8 instead of 2×8, hydraulic instead of mechanical disc brakes, and a 29" option for taller riders. The FireFly M1 is still available while stocks last.

Should I choose 27.5" or 29" wheels?

Go by your height. 27.5" comes in S (160–168cm), M (166–176cm) and L (174–186cm) and feels nimbler on tighter paths. 29" comes in L (176–186cm) and XL (183–193cm) and rolls over bumps more easily. Between sizes? Most riders prefer the smaller frame.

When will my pre-order arrive?

The bikes are expected at our Brisbane warehouse on 17 November. We usually dispatch within 24 hours of arrival, or have your bike ready for pickup. Dates can change if shipping is delayed. We’ll email you if yours changes. $459 is our pre-order price and is only available while pre-orders are open.

Does it arrive assembled?

Three options: courier Australia-wide (arrives 85% assembled in a bike box, with step-by-step guides and videos in our Help Centre), local delivery around Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich (fully assembled and tuned by our mechanics, ready to ride), or free pickup from our Brisbane warehouse, fully assembled.
